Virginia Voorhees Ashmore was born 1848 in Trenton, NJ, the youngest of 8 known surviving children (2 boys/6 girls) born to ship's Captain Henry J. Ashmore and his wife, Catherine "Kate" Smith. She is descended from a prominent line of Ashmores and Smiths who settled in Lamberton in south Trenton during the Colonial period and is a direct descendant of Barnt DeKlyn (1745-.1825)

Virginia was 24 years old when she married on June 6, 1872 to 26-year old Samuel Stroud Armstrong, son of Horatio Gates Armstrong, the wealthy Trenton paper manufacturer. Her husband would spend his entire career in service with Quartermaster General's office of the NJ National Guard, rising in rank from Captain to Lt. Colonel.

Virginia and Samuel would become parents to 2 known children:

* Rev. Henry Watson Armstrong (1875-1960)
* Katherine Margaret Armstrong (1878-1954)

Virginia was widowed in 1930 when her husband of 58 years died at age 84. She survived him 9 years, passing in 1939 at the advanced age of 91.

Son, Henry Watson Armstrong entered the ministry, marrying Grace Ward and becoming parents to Malcom Ward Armstrong, a successful stock broker and businessman; and Virginia (ca. 1905-1966) who married Hungarian-born artist, Geza de Vegh (1905-1989) and worked alongside her husband at their Tinton Falls, NJ studio.
