Mary Etta Allen was the daughter of John W. Ashton and Elizabeth Norton Slocum. She grew up in New Bedford, Mass until she married Joseph Chase Allen on Nov. 17, 1915 and eventually moved to Martha's Vineyard where she remained until her illness and eventual death. The couple had three children, twins George and Everett and then Marjorie.
