Direct descendant of Peter Aspinwall who settled in Brookline MA in 1630 and of John Howland and John Tillery who came over on the Mayflower in 1620.

At the age of 16 he joined the Union forces in response to a call for volunteers by President Lincoln. He was a member of Company F, 33rd New York Volunteers. At the close of the war he joined his commanding officer Col John Carter of Titusville PA and entered business. In 1885, he came to Washington accepting a position in the Interior Department. He was as 32d degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Knight Templar and a life member of Almas Temple.
