Mary Atchison Dies At 89
Daughter Succumbs 3 Days Later
Our community was saddened this past week by the death of Mrs. Mary Atchison, a pioneer of this community, and her daughter, Mrs. Will (Minnie) Adams. Mrs. Atchison passed away October 27 at the age of 89. Her funeral was Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Adams passed away in the Smith county hospital October 30 at the age of 68. She had been an invalid for the past seven years. Besides her husband she was tenderly cared for by Mrs. Grace Wyley Camp the past 2 1/2 years. Her funeral was Monday afternoon. Lloyd and Tom Atchison and their families of Denver attended their mother's and sister's funerals.
Minnie May Adams, the eldest child of Mary and Henry Atchison, was born August 31, 1891, at Kirwin, Kansas. She departed this life on October 30, 1959, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital at the age of 68 years, 1 month, and 30 days.
She was married to William C. Adams of Kirwin on September 14, 1914. To this union two sons were born. Victor Wayne died in infancy.
She was preceded in death also by her father in 1941, her mother just four days prior to her death, and a sister in 1916.
She became an invalid six years ago. Her husband, other relatives, and friends did all that loving hands could do to help her, as well as the skillful care of physicians and nurses.
She was patient during her long illness, and she had a smile and cheering word for those who came to see her.
She was a member of the Kirwin Community Methodist church and took an active part in the various organizations, the Sunday school, the Woman’s Society of Christian Service and other groups.
She was a devoted wife and mother, a good neighbor and a warm friend to many people. She found great pleasure in having her grandchildren about her, and they were devoted to her.
The family had lived for some 18 years on a farm in the area now enclosed by the Kirwin Dam. They lived in Phillipsburg for a short time and then moved to Kirwin June 15, 1954.
Her passing brings sadness not only to her loved ones but to a host of neighbors and friends as well.
Surviving relatives are as follows:

Son DeVaun C. Adams and wife Estella and two grandsons, David and Ronnie Adams of Phillipsburg
Her brothers Lloyd and Thomas Atchison of Lakewood, Colorado
Numerous other relatives and friends mourn her passing.
Memorial services were held Monday, November 2, 1959, at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist Church in Kirwin with Rev. W. F. Little officiating. Music was by Iola McFadden and Mildred Lemon, accompanied by Mrs. Frank Townsend.
Pallbearers were: Verd Blomfield, Frank Townsend, Russell McFadden, Merle Scott, Ivan Peugh and Oral Power. Flower bearers were Hazel Fink, Angie Gray, Hazel Scott and Maude Meckenstock. Interment was in the Kirwin Cemetery.
