Erastus was the son of Aldolphus Atherton and Roxanna White.

On Nov 1, 1858 in Stratford he married Sophronia B. Wheeler, daughter of Phineas Wheeler and Eunice Blodgett.

Their children were Mary Alma, Harvey, Eva, Albertha, Fred, Irvin, Elvin, George Everett, Phineas, and Effie. The 1900 & 1910 census showed they had 9 children with only 7 living in 1900, but all the birth/marriage/death certs and census reports shows they had ten children who all survived well past 1900.

On Sept 19, 1862 he enlisted in the NH 13th Infantry Company H and served in the Civil War until he was mustered out on June 21, 1865 in Richmond, VA.
