A memorial service followed by interment will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, at the Church of the Epiphany. Interment will follow the service.
Mr. Atkins was born March 1, 1920, in Enosburg Falls, Vermont, to the late Reverend and Mrs. John Norton Atkins. After graduating from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va., he returned to Sewanee, Tennessee, where he was raised. He attended the University of the South where he earned his degree in Philosophy in 1941.
After college graduation Mr. Atkins enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he received his commission and served as an officer on the USS Conway in World War II. He was discharged as a Lt. Commander in 1945.
Mr. Atkins moved to Eden in 1968 where he worked as a manager for Fieldcrest until his retirement in 1985. He had been an active member of the Rockingham County Historical Society, Rockingham County Council on Aging, Rotary Club, Sewanee Board of Trustees, and as a congregant at the Church of the Epiphany where he served on the vestry, as a lay reader, church historian, and as church treasurer for 32 years. He pursued a lifelong interest in family history and genealogy and enjoyed traveling within the U.S. and overseas to research his family's ancestry.
He is survived by his spouse of 66 years, Grace Holton Atkins of Eden; a son, David George Atkins; two daughters, Cynthia Atkins Uzzell and Linda Atkins Strong; four granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
