Mr. Abner Thomas Atkins, 87, of 1501 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, passed away Monday night, April 15, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Atkins was born January 6, 1926, in Surry County, the son of the late Powell and Lela Atkins Atkins. Abner served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a lifelong farmer, in addition to being a truck driver for York Oil Company for 20 years and Mount Airy Oil Company for nearly 25 years. Following his retirement as a truck driver, he worked as an attendant for the Surry County Recycling Center. Mr. Atkins was a member of Dover Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Mike Hutchens and Lynn and Greg Quesinberry, all of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Susan Atkins of Mount Airy; six grandchildren and their spouses, Cynthia Johnson, Karen Adams, Darian and Becky Johnson, Heather and Mike Marsh, Kevin Quesinberry, and Kimberly and Joshua Holder, all of Mount Airy; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Maggie Atkins Danley of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Danley Atkins; a sister, Christine Simpson; three brothers, Nathan Atkins, Foy Atkins, and Ellis Atkins; and a great-great-grandson, Joshua Hayden. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Dover Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeremy Morton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
