U.S. Congressman. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he graduated from Wallace University School, in 1912, from Vanderbilt University, in 1916, from the law department of Cumberland University, in 1917, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee. During World War I, he served in the 47th Company, 2nd Division, United States Marines, American Expeditionary Forces, in France. After the war he commenced the practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1920, was attorney general of the tenth judicial circuit of Tennessee, (1926-34) and Tennessee State commissioner of Smoky Mountain National Park, (1931-33). In 1937, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth Congress, serving until 1939. After leaving Congress he returned to the practice of law until his death at age 53 in Nashville, Tennessee.
