Mary was born on 31 March 1850 to David C. Atwell and Melissa D. Meeker. The family resided in Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan. By 1868, the family had moved to Attica, also located in Lapeer County. When preparing this farm for planting, her father hired day laborers to assist in cultivating the new fields, and among them was a young widower named Luman N. Allen. Soon, Mary touched his heart.

Mary and Luman were married on 25 Sep 1869. Together, they had six children, including two who died quite young. The four children who lived to adult age include: Henry H. Allen Sr., Joseph A. Allen, Alfred E. Allen, and James F. Allen. Luman and Mary remained in Lapeer County for the remainder of their lives. They were devoted to family and were remembered fondly by their grandchildren.
