Lydia Garrison Auchincloss, formerly of Upper Allen Township, passed away in her home in Sarasota, FL on March 23, 2009. She was 100.
Born in West Orange, NJ, April 3, 1908 to Marian Knight and Philip McKim Garrison, she was a great granddaughter of anti-slavery zealot and newspaper editor/publisher William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879).
Mrs. Auchincloss graduated from Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1926. She enrolled in the first class of Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY, graduating in 1928. After working as an executive secretary in the insurance industry in New York City, she married Samuel Auchincloss on February 18, 1939. Mr. Auchincloss was a Vice President of the New York Quotation Company and held top-level posts at several manufacturing companies before retiring in 1971 as president of AMP Incorporated. He died in 1991.
Mrs. Auchincloss held volunteer leadership positions at Planned Parenthood affiliates in Buffalo, NY, Lancaster, PA, Boston, MA, and Harrisburg, PA.
Surviving are her sons, Philip Sloan Auchincloss of Pontlevoy, France and Samuel Sloan Auchincloss of Harrisburg, PA; four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are her stepson, Robert Gordon Auchincloss of Pleasant Valley, NY;his three daughters and three granddaughters.
We will miss the pleasure of her company, the "elegance and beauty" that she sought out and created in her life wherever she happened to be. It is with great sorrow that her family and friends must accept the fact that she is gone.
