Carl Auf der Heide died at sea in 1880 when he and his family were returning to Germany to visit relatives. He was buried at sea. The statue on his tombstone represents a young boy with his hand on a ship's anchor. The German inscription has eroded and is difficult to read but gives the latitude and longitude of his burial and the name of the ship.
