Survived by three sons; Danny, Dale, and Dave, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grand children.
US Navy Vet, who served aboard the USS Lexington CV-2 "Lady Lex" at the start of WWII. He was aboard the Lady Lex two days out of port when Peal Harbor was attacked on 7 December 1941. The Lady Lex was sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 8 May 1942.
From one of Max's descendants: "My family's beloved Grandpa Max "Augie", was a Navy veteran. He was a gunner on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington when the ship was sunk in 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea. During the fight, fire from Japanese torpedo planes hit him in the right arm, chest, and both legs.
"Two or three guys were already down", he said. "I was trying to load some more .50-caliber boxes there on the machine gun, and they caught me in the crossfire."
After being evacuated from the sinking ship, grandpa Max spent 8 months in the Tongan Islands being nursed by natives.
"I was marooned there and spent the biggest year of my life trying to get back in some kind of health."
Eventually, a U.S. freighter brought him and other wounded soldiers back to the states.
Grandpa Max Augustine received a Purple heart.
My grandpa is no longer with us as he has recently passed on. Grandpa RIP... and... Thank you grandpa Max, we love and cherish you always in our hearts."
