Alfred appeared in the 1850 U.S. Census for Ward 1, Cleveland, Ohio as 11 years old, living in the household of his father, Peter Austin, 53, a gardener, and mother, Elizabeth, 52, along with six siblings. The entire family was born in England, except the youngest child, Charles, born in Ohio, 1845. He again appeared in the 1860 U.S. Census but for Newburgh Hts., Ohio, in Cuyahoga County.

Alfred enlisted in Company A, 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, April 22, 1861, at 22 years of age, for a 3-month term of service at the start of the Civil War. He was mustered out at the end of his term of service, June 19, 1861. Rank: Private. He reenlisted in Company A, September 11, 1861, for a 3-year term of service. He was killed in action at the Battle of Ringgold, in northern Georgia. Rank: Corporal. His name is on Panel #1 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, and on the monument of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at 6901 Woodland Ave., both located in Cleveland, Ohio. Some of his family's members spelled their last name as "Austen." Alfred's name was spelled "Austin" in military records, the U.S. Censuses, and on both monuments. The exception is on his cemetery monument at Lake View Cemetery where is is spelled "Austen."
