Mr. Avery was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945. He retired in 1986 from the U.S. Steel Mill in Fairless Hills, PA after many years of service. One of his favorite hobbies was playing golf.
Preceded in death, his parents, Palmer and Florence Avery, a daughter, Kimberly Settles Avery, and a stepdaughter, Leslie Jones. Left to cherish his precious memories, his wife, Lillian "Ducky" Avery; a sister, Lucille Sweeney of North Carolina; two sisters-in-law; three stepchildren, Walter "Jim", Stephanie "Stevie" Settles and Tracy Settles-Hamilton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Baptist Church, 70 Oregon Avenue, Ewing. Interment will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brig. General William C. Doyle Veteran Memorial Cemetery, North Hanover. Calling hours will be 11 a.m. until time of service at church. The Rev. Dr. Vincent Jackson, pastor will officiate. Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home.
