HIGHLAND MOUNTAIN – Herman Lee Avis, 62, died Saturday, April 8, 1995, at his home, following a long illness.
Born Oct. 30, 1932, at Quinnimont, he was the son of the late Lawrence Edward Kessler and Effie Myrtle Avis.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Jackson; a grandson, William Cody Avis; two halfbrothers, Dale and Joseph Kessler and two sisters, Elsie Marie Doughton and Frances Elizabeth Mays.
Mr. Avis was a member of the Chestnut Knob Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Irvin Avis; three daughters, sArah Thompson and her husband, Jurl of Rainelle, Sheila Ernest and her husband, Dwayne of Matoaka and Donna Avis and Rocky Fox, both at home; two halfbrothers, Dallas Kessler and Wilson Kessler of Mt. Hope; three halfsisters, Janie Bennett, Nila Smith and Betty Bennett, all of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
