Kate was the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Herring) Aylward. She married Alfred Guppy in 1940 in Peoria. He died in 1971. She later married Everett Auten in Peoria. He preceded her in death in 2003.

Surviving are one son, James (Joyce) Guppy; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, two stepchildren; five step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille (Del) Lauterbach and Margaret Ruckel; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Aylward, Edward Aylward and Jack Aylward, and one sister, Betty Hinners.

Mrs. Auten worked for over 25 years as a bookkeeper for the former Bartonville State Hospital prior to her retirement. She also served for eight years on the Limestone Board of Trustees.

She enjoyed vegetable and especially flower gardening.

She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Bartonville and the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 979 also in Bartonville.
