Longtime Anchorage resident Alice Elizabeth Aylward, 89, died Dec. 8 at Mary Conrad Center. Services were at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2901 E. Huffman Road. A memorial service was at American Legion, Jack Henry Unit No. 1, 840 W. Fireweed Lane. Burial was at Anchorage Memorial Park.

Ms. Aylward was born Jan. 20, 1905, in Earlville, Ill. She attended school in Heron Lake, Minn. and moved to Alaska in 1936. Ms. Aylward was a homemaker for her six children and foster children. She had been affiliated with the Holy Family Cathedral since 1936, and was a member of Women of the Moose, Academy of Friendship, Pioneers of Alaska, Eight/Forty, Chapeau Passe, a past president of American Legion Auxiliary Jack Henry Unit No. 1 and of Amvets Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Alaska Crippled Children's Association in Anchorage. For 1984-85, she was named Woman of the Year by the American Legion. Her family said: "Music was an important part of her life. She loved to play the piano and sing. . . . She loved her family above all else and enjoyed school and church functions with her grandchildren and great grandchildren." Ms. Aylward was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, and sons, Martin and Michael.

She is survived by her children, Dan Aylward and Alice White both of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, John and Francine of Buckley, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Ken Gerondale of Anchorage; brother, Bernard Garland of Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Catherine Trautner of Bijou, Minn., and two foster daughters, Delores Olson Benett of Tacoma, Wash., and Mary Olson Fuqua of Billings, Mont. Memorial donations may be sent to American Lung Association of Alaska, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements are by Kehl's Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel.
