Chiyoko Alice Baba died peacefully in her 99th year on Oct. 8, 2013 at Seattle Keiro. She was born on Oct. 1, 1914 in O'Brien, WA the second child of Takejiro and Asano Hiramatsu. Alice lived and worked on the family farm with her brother and three sisters. She graduated from Kent High School. Alice moved to Seattle upon her marriage to Seiji Baba on Aug. 22, 1937 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. In 1942 along with others of Japanese ancestry, Alice was sent to the Puyallup Assembly Center and then to the Minidoka Concentration Camp. After the war, Seiji and Alice operated the Post Hotel in Pioneer Square. After moving to Beacon Hill in 1958, Alice worked at Sunset Sportswear until her retirement in 1976. After Seiji's death in 1977, Alice continued to live alone in their Beacon Hill home until her move to Nikkei Manor Assisted Living in 2005.

Alice's life centered around her family and her church. The family will remember all the Sunday dinners at her home. She enjoyed making all types of crafts, from Japanese bunka to quilts to basketry. She was a faithful and active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church for many decades. In later years, Alice met weekly with a small group of women making crafts to raise funds for the church. She also spent many happy hours at senior centers.

Alice will be remembered for her gentle demeanor and frequent smiles. She was always positive in her outlook and enjoyed being with family and friends.

Left to mourn are her daughters Kathryn Yoshida (Ron Mamo), JoAnn Okada (Mako), Sharon Kitamoto (Frank), and Fran Kato; grandchildren Laurie Cox (Doug), Julie Okada, Cindy Furutani (Rob), Christy Kato, Tracy Kato, Derek Kitamoto, David Yoshida (Colleen), Doug Yoshida (Amy), and Stan Louie; great-grandchildren Stephanie and Sarah Cox, Jared and Jenna Louie, Hunter, Haley and Holden Furutani, Jaime Stehlik, and Ethan and Kieren Yoshida. She is also survived by brother-in-law Ted Yasuda and sisters-in-law Toshiko Yoneji and Mary Hiramatsu.
