Henry's mother (Eliza) died when he was just a child. His father's second marriage was to Mary Virginia Hales on March 27, 1867 when Henry was 10 years of age.
Henry spent his first 16 years in Frankfort, KY. He first moved to Indianapolis, IN where he worked as a driver of a horse or mule-drawn streetcar. He then moved to Greenwood, IN where he worked on the railroad. In 1884, he went into the canning business in Greenwood. He later moved to Michigan where he worked for 16 years in the fruit canning business. In time, he located to Columbus WI where he organized 2 canning companies in Elba, WI which he managed until 1920. At that time, he moved to Merrill, WI where he organized the Lincoln Canning Company, which he managed until his death in 1933. He was active in promoting the business welfare of the city, and was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Blue Lodge Masons.
