William married Adaline February 19, 1852 in Manchester.

William was educated in the common schools and New London Academy at New London, New Hampshire. He assisted his father on the homestead farm, and in time inherited the property. He served as superintendent of schools and was a member of the Free Baptist Church. William was a Republican from the formation of that party, also a member of King Solomon Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, at Andover, and of the local lodge of Odd Fellows.

Their 4 children are:
•Nahum Josiah who was born September 3, 1854 and died April 22, 1934. He was a New Hampshire Governor. He has a special site as a "Famous Person" on Find A Grave and be found there.
•Lizzie Cornelia who was born April 5, 1856 and died July 15, 1880.
•Bertha Sarah who was born December 18, 1859 and died December 26, 1899. She married January 1, 1884, Dr Charles Freemont Flanders. He died February 4, 1940 in St Petersburg, Pinellas co, Florida. He was buried in Manchester, where they had previously resided. His 2nd wife is Lillian. Their children are: Dalton, who resided in West Roxbury, MA; Robert, who was also a Doctor in Manchester; and David.
•Mary Emery who was born August 12, 1861. She married October 10, 1895, Daniel Emerson and resided in Lynn, Essex co, MA. They had one child.
