HELEN BACON

Helen R. Bacon

Mrs. Helen R. (McHugh) Bacon, age 75, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

A native Delawarean, Mrs. Bacon was born in New Castle on Christmas Eve 1933, a daughter of the late James J. McHugh and Helen Young McHugh. She was employed with the Medical Records Department at the St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington until her retirement.

A deeply spiritual woman, Mrs. Bacon shared her Catholic faith throughout her entire life. She was a longtime member of Holy Family parish, where she taught in the CCD program and served as a Eucharistic Minister. With her husband, she was also active in the Holy Angels Athletic Association for many years.

She received great enjoyment from sharing her many happy memories of growing up in Old New Castle. However, above all, Helen Bacon will be remembered as a caring and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whose greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her beloved family.

Mrs. Bacon was welcomed home by her husband, Leonard Michael Bacon, Sr., and her daughter, Theresa Ann Bacon, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Leonard Michael Bacon, Jr. (Shirl) of Elkton; James Francis Bacon (Mary Jane) of Middletown; Joseph Michael Bacon (Kelly) of Elkton; Christopher Michael Bacon (Dana) of Jacksonville, FL; Patricia Dobies (Richard) of New Orleans, LA; Francis Xavier Bacon (Cindy) of Bear; Mary Clare Waegele (Robert) of Newark; and Elizabeth Ann Heitzenroder (Kevin) of Newark; sisters, Marie Severin, Patricia Schmidt, and Theresa Waltz; 27 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren with one expected; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, November 30, 2009, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of Mrs. Bacon to the Holy Family Building Fund, 15 Gender Road, Newark, DE 19713.
