Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Lewis Colonial Mortuary for Rear Adm. Barton E. Bacon Jr., 74, who first came to San Diego when he was assigned to the battleship Idaho in 1925.
Bacon, who died Thursday while playing golf in Alameda, Calif., was a resident of Lafayette, Calif.
Born in Rockwood, Tenn., he was a railroad telegrapher before entering the Naval Academy, from which he was graduated in 1925. At the start of World War II he was commanding officer of the submarine Pickerel and made five war patrols in the Pacific. In 1944 Bacon was named submarine division commander in the Southwest Pacific Fleet and a year later was assigned as commanding officer of the Submarine School at New London, Conn. He also had been submarine squadron commander in the 7th Fleet, chief of staff of the Submarine Force in the Pacific Fleet and ended his 31-year Navy career as commander of the 12th Naval District Reserve Center at Treasure Island.
His decorations include the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit with Gold Star and American Defense, American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Victory, Japanese Occupation and China Service medals.
Survivors include his widow, Ruth; three sons, all navy commanders in the submarine service, Roger F. of Pearl Harbor and Barton E. III and Daniel K., both of San Diego; a sister, Jeannette Bacon of El Cajon, and four grandchildren.

The president of the United States of America takes
pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander
Barton Elijah Bacon, Jr. (NSN: 0-59412), United States
Navy for extraordinary heroism in the line of his
profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S.
PICKEREL (SS-177), during the period from 8
Dec 1941 to 26 August 1942. While commanding
the submarine PICKEREL during five patrols in the
Asiatic Theater, Commander Bacon on one occasion
attacked a Japanese supply ship and a troop transport
with great tactical skill, sinking both of them. In other
actions during these patrols his excellent judgment and
skill were responsible for heavy damage to a number of
enemy ships. Commander Bacon's conduct throughout
was an inspiration to his officers and men, and are in
keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service.
