J. O. "Jim" Irwin replaced Allen R. Bacon (who had been Merritt-Chapman & Scott (MCS) Project Manager since Dec 1957) on Thursday, June 8, 1961, the day that Bacon suddenly quit. Jan Kessler, who used to babysit for the Bacons, quoted from a book: "Al Bacon was Merritt-Chapman & Scott's Project Manager. On June 8, 1961, Bacon had been ousted, told he was through, and ushered out the door; on the same day, he was replaced by Jim Irwin." MCS was the Prime Contractor on Glen Canyon Dam.

Allen, 55, was born in California on February 16, 1912 and died in Los Angeles County, CA on June 1, 1967. His parents were Claude Allen Bacon (1890–1971) & Doretta M. Peterson (1891–1957). Doretta's mother's maiden name was Scow.

He was baptized at age 43 on Feb 27, 1955, at St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, The Dalles, OR

His first wife was Helene B (Bingham) Bacon (1907–1951). They had two girls and two boys.
His third wife was Wanda Gayle (Grundy) Bacon. It is unknown if they had any children of their own.

He was survived by sons, Stuart Allen Bacon (1937–1989) and Garth M. Bacon '62 (Aug 12, 1944 -), 18576 Bucknall Rd, Saratoga, CA, in 1980; 22801 Big Basin Way, -9783, (408) 872-0604 after that. Garth is the only child from Allen's first marriage to come to Page with Allen & Garth's stepmother, Wanda.

Allen and Helene traveled around so much, they managed to get on TWO Censuses in 1940!

ALLEN R. BACON . . . Another Mighty Span

Allen R. Bacon, Project Manager for Merritt, Chapman and Scott Corp, grew up in the building trade. A son of a California building contractor, by the time he was 20, he had acquired experience as an iron worker. He began heavy construction tasks in 1932 as a foreman on the construction of Hoover Dam. By 1935, he had worked up to Assistant Superintendent in charge of structural steel and mechanical work on this first of the high dams to be built in this country. From Boulder, he went on to Parker Dam, the Albener Falls Dam and power house in Idaho, Buggs Island powerhouse in VA, and the Mimdoka power plant in ID, to name a few, specializing for the most part in the construction of hydroelectric plants. His last job before coming to Glen Canyon was a 175 million dollar aluminum reduction plant and mill built by Henry J. Kaiser Co. of Oakland, CA for Kaiser Aluminum. He served as resident manager.

A hard driving engineer, Bacon spends and average of 12 hours at his desk or in the field as top man for MCS on the giant Glen Canyon Project. The 107 million dollar prime contract held by MCS includes construction of the 700 foot high dam and power house, second only to Hoover in size. The entire job is expected to last seven to ten years.

No great change in basic construction principles has been seen by Bacon. Most of the progress in the past 20 years has been made in the heavy equipment field. Bulldozers used at Hoover were unwieldy, clumsy affairs compared to the 26-ton giants of today. Tunnel one work -- also an integral part of big dam construction -- has been streamlined to the point where a small crew working from truck-mounted drilling equipment can do the job required of 40 men two decades ago. In a world becoming more specialized by the day, from Hoover Dam to Glen Canyon, he has installation of generating equipment that particularly fits him for his present assignment.

50 YEARS AGO (Feb 4, 1959)

500 men — that's about 70% of the crew — are back at work on the Glen Canyon Dam ending their 12 day walk out. Allen R. Bacon, Project Manager, expects to "Turn the river" within ten days time.
