New Hampshire Governor. He was a successful manufacturer and mill owner, when he entered politics as chairman of the board for Gilmanton Academy, in 1804. He was aide to Governor John Langdon, (1805-12), a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, (1810-12) and a member of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1814-17). In addition he served as the Strafford County Sheriff, (1820-30). In 1834, he was elected as a Democratic the 15th Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1836. During his Governorship, a legislation was sanctioned that facilitated smallpox prevention, improvements to the state militia were lobbied and penal reforms were endorsed. After leaving office, he lived in retirement until his death at age 73.
