German Lutheran pastor who came to America in 1853. Served congregations in Calumet, Theresa, Watertown and Milwaukee, all Wisconsin.
President of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod 1860-1864, 1867-1889.
He helped negotiate the formation of the Lutheran Synodical Conference with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in 1872, serving as its president from 1882 to 1912.
He served as president of the board of trustees of Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin 1865-1913.
