Reverend Garner "Sonny" Bailey Jr. of Stanaford, died at home on Monday, December 14, 2009, with his family by his side.

He was born in Sabine, W.Va., on May 11, 1942, to Garner and Lilly (Payne) Bailey. His grandparents were C.S. and Nancy Payne and Cassie Bailey. Sonny was preceded in death by sisters: Ruth Whitefield of Gaithersburg, Md.; Nancy Roessler of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; Juanita Cook of Turkey Creek, W.Va.; brothers-in-law Buddy Roessler of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; Raymond Stafford of Bolt, W.Va.; two special nieces Jane Ellen Allen of Mount Tabor, W.Va.; and Christy Stafford of Orlando, Fla.

He was followed in death by his sister, Connie Browning of Salt Lake City, Utah (December 15, 2009).

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dana Hinkle Bailey; three sons: John (Donna) of Huntington; Michael (Deanna) of Charlotte, N.C.; and Timmy (Dee) of Stanaford; nine grandchildren: Ashlie (Jeremy) Ellis of Huntington; Jennifer (Matt) White of Suffolk, Va.; Amber Bailey of Beaver; Thomas Bailey, USMC, Japan; Chase Bailey of Stanaford; Jaccob Bailey of Huntington; Devin Shehan of Charlotte, N.C.; Kayte Eplin of Huntington; and Savanah Eplin of Huntington; one great-grand daughter, Krystena White of Suffolk, Va.; two special daughters-in-law: Terrie Via Bailey of Beaver, and Tena Adkins Keith of Morganton, N.C.; brothers-in-law: Ernie (Jenny Rose) Hinkle of Beckley; Lawrence (Helen) Hinkle of Beckley; Jimmy (Linda) Hinkle of Beckley; Byron Cook of Turkey Creek; and Stanley Browning of Salt Lake City, Utah; two special pets: Belle and Mocha; and many nieces, nephews, church family, and dear friends.

Sonny attended Glen Rogers High School before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He became a highly decorated Master Sergeant during his 20-year career. His duty stations included three tours of duty at Camp Lejeune, N.C.; Iwakuni, Japan; Yuma, Ariz.; San Diego, Calif; Honolulu, Hawaii; and two tours in Vietnam. He spent 20 years at Beckley Newspaper Inc. in the Circulation Department as a District Manager.

He served as a Teacher Parent at New River Ranch in Fayetteville, W.Va. He also served eight years as a scout leader for Pack 95 in Yuma, Ariz.; and 20 years at Pine Lodge ministering to the residents. Sonny's most cherished role was serving the Lord. He has been pastor at Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church for the last 10 years and previously at Cunard Baptist Church in Fayetteville, W.Va.

His love for his family, friends, country, and pets will be remembered and treasured by all. This was a man of integrity — he lived his life with honesty, sincerity, love, affection and humor. Sonny had a unique talent to make each person feel special and valuable; to find their gifts. He left this world a better place.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Hollywood Baptist Church on Luray Street in MacArthur from 6 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009, at Hollywood with Rev. Bill Parker officiating. The graveside service will immediately follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with military honors.
