Ellen B. Amnott, 97, formerly of Franklin Towers in Portland, died here Tuesday at her granddaughter Janet Flood's residence, where she had resided for the past two years.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Ralph E. and Mada A. Cleaves Bailey, attended Hollis schools and graduated from Hollis High School. She also attended Gray's Business School.

She worked in the Registry of Deeds office and also worked for the Portland School Department as a cafeteria worker.

Mrs. Amnott was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Portland, and was a member of the Women's Federation there. She also belonged to the Beacon Club and the Marine Mothers Club during World War II. She loved to read and collect books and visit the library, and also enjoyed window shopping.

Surviving are three sons, Elwyn F. Beane of Cape Elizabeth, Donald E. Beane of Peaks Island and Truman B. Amnott, Jr. of Portland; two daughters, Marjorie Beane Jones and Dorothy Amnott Wallace, both of Portland; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Paul Hanneman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
