Gresham resident Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Baldwin, 86, died Wednesday, March 25, at Good Samaritan Fairlawn Retirement Center, surrounded by her family.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave., Portland. Private interement with military honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Betty was born Nov. 10, 1922, n Waukesha, Wis., to William James and Anna (Grandman) Clark. Betty graduated from high school and attended Carroll College in Waukesha until she was old enough to enter the Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing. She received her diploma as a registered nurse and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps.

During World War II, Betty served on Saipan and Tinian in the Northern Mariana Islands. She met her future husband, Capt. Dale M. Baldwin, on Saipan, and they were married May 4, 1946.

Betty was a homemaker for several years but returned to nursing and worked in Poplar, Mont., and in carson City, Nev. She continued her studies at the University of Nevada. After moving to Gresham in 1966, she received her bachelor's degree in nursing and her master's degree in nursing education from Oregon Health & Science University.

Betty taught nursing for a number of years at Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing and at Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. She finished her career as head of the nursing department at Mt. Hood Community College.

Betty and Dale lived in Corbett for several years before returning to Gresham. She was devout Lutheran, and friends and family knew her as a compassionate, wise, hospitable, cheerful and caring person.

Survivors include her husband; sons, James Baldwin of Bangkok, Thailand, and Thomas Baldwin of Korea; daughter, Collyn Baldwin of Gresham; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave., Portland, 97230-3104.

Gresham Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
