He was the son of Frank Fowler Baldwin, the nephew of Harry A. Baldwin and the grandson of Henry Perrine Baldwins.

HP Baldwin was one of the founds with the ST Alexander of the corporation known today as Alexander & Baldwin Inc, now in its 66th year.

Asa Baldwin was the last member of an Island pioneer missionary family to be active in the top management of one of the so called 'big five' firms.

Frank and Harry Baldwin were the two sons of HP Baldwin who managed the main business of A&B, the Maui plantations for most of Asa Baldwins' life.

Asa was born on Maui Nov 27, 1906. His mother who survives him is Harriet Kittredge Baldwin.

Mr. Baldwin attended Maui grammar school and Thatcher School in California, a prep school for eastern Ivy League universities. He graduated from Yale where he was on the polo team in 1929 and went to work for Maui Agricultural Co, as a water luna in 1930.

In 1933 he was married to former Virginia Castle of Honolulu, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold KL Castle. She also survives him with their two sons, Michael and John and four grandchildren.

He was largely responsible from the beginning for the Kahului town development, conceived in 1947 as a master plan for the relocation of plantation employees from company towns and camps into their own homes.
