US Congressman. Graduating as a civil engineer from Lawrence University Wisconsin, in 1855, he was engaged with the Chicago & North Western Railway, until 1861. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Captain in command of Company E, 2nd Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he was a railroad engineering superintendent in Kansas and moved to Minnesota, in 1885. In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he was chairman of the Chippewa Indian Commission, (1895 to 1897) and later settled in Washington State, until his death at age 63.
