A. Richard "Dick" Baldwin, Ph.D., 93, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born in Palmyra, Mich. to Arthur Tobias and Lovina "Bessie" (Ford) Baldwin on Feb. 20, 1918.

Instead of accepting a position pitching baseball for the Washington Senators, he went to college and became an internationally recognized expert on edible fats, oils and agricultural products.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from John B. Stetson University in Deland, Fla. and his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. He did government research during World War II which contributed to the heat stability and spreadability of margarine for the troops.

On Aug. 8, 1941, he married his college sweetheart Eleanor Alida Warner. They settled in Berwyn, Ill. where he worked for Corn Products, Inc. for 10 years leading research on oils and package products.

Then they moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Cargill, Inc. for 29 years. He served as vice president and executive director of research and was a member of the board of directors. He guided the company's wide-ranging research and technical programs.

He traveled to most countries of the world doing business and developed products like polyurethane varnish and high oil content sunflower seed. He authored many scientific publications and held numerous patents in the field of fats and oils. He was a regular contributor on these subjects to the Encyclopedia Britannica.

He served as president of the American Oil Chemist's Society and received their highest service award. For almost four decades, he was the editor of the Journal of the American Oil Chemist's Society and founding editor of the A.O.C.S. journal Lipids.

He received many awards, both in the United States and abroad. He was active in many scientific and agribusiness organizations. He served numerous state and national agencies including the National Academy of Science-Agriculture Research Institute (director, past president), Committee on Research and Agricultural Policies, National Academy of Science- National Research Council, National Academy of Engineering- Agricultural Development and Space Applications Board, NASA-Advisory Council, Presidential (Carter) Mission on Agricultural Development in Central America and the Caribbean, U.S. Agency for International Development- Research Advisory Committee, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Policy Advisory Committee and also Utilization Research and Development Advisory Committee,

He served on the Board of the Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School in Honduras for many years.

His hobbies included gardening, being a rock hound, woodworking, growing trees and farm management. He was a national champion in shuffleboard.

He was very active member of Grace Trinity Church in Minneapolis. In the last few years, they moved to Hibbing to be near family. He was very active in the Deer Lake Association and was on the Realife Cooperative Board.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eleanor; sister, Lovina Turner (Eugene-deceased); daughter, Eleanor "Louise" Baldwin; sons, Arthur Christian "Chris" Baldwin (Dana) and Richard Lawrence "Larry" Baldwin (Jan); grandchildren, Arthur Andrew "Andy" Baldwin, Alexi Baldwin and Nicole Baldwin.

He was preceded in death by both parents; and an infant sister, Helen Delight.

Interment will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Deer River,
