Norman Ballin, M.D., a long-time ophthalmologist in Palo Alto, died peacefully on June 9th after recently being diagnosed with metastatic cancer. He was 82.

Dr. Ballin was raised in Belle Harbor, New York, and graduated from Cornell University with honors in 1952. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict before entering medical school at the University of Chicago where he graduated in 1959. After residency training in the initial class at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, Dr. Ballin went on to complete sub-speciality fellowships in glaucoma and related fields throughout the country, including the highly-regarded Shaffer fellowship. He practiced at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic and served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University from 1967 until his retirement in 1992. After his retirement, he remained active in the medical community at both Stanford and the Veteran's Administration Hospitals. An esteemed mentor and teacher, Dr. Ballin shared his love of medicine with many who followed in his footsteps. He enjoyed the life-long camaraderie of his colleagues and maintained those connections well into his retirement years.

An avid 49er fan dating back to the days of Kezar Stadium, Dr. Ballin served as the team ophthalmologist for many years. His keen interest in sports and the 49er football team was second only to his interest in singing. Both of these interests he shared with his loving wife of 37 years, Maria. He spent many joyful years as a member of the Aurora Singers, traveling with Maria to Albi, France, to sing with Aurora's sister choir.

Dr. Ballin is survived by his wife Maria, sister Harriet Chenitz of Boynton Beach, Fl., daughter Tracy Ballin Shake (Scott) of Tucson, Ariz., stepsons Carlos (Brenda) Villescaz of Turlock, and David (Carmen) Villescaz of Woodland, grandchildren Lisa Kay (Jamie), Talina (Jason), Veronica (Chris), Ernie, Carla, David, Daniel, Chad and Amanda and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents Samuel and Eva Ballin and stepson Ernie Villescaz.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 14th, at 6:00 p.m., at the Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Road, Redwood City. Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 15th, at 11:00 a.m., at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, Ca. A reception will follow at the Ballin home beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, 795 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, Ca 94301.
