Anthony Balling left Germany for the California gold fields, where he arrived in 1849. He enlisted as a private at Stockton, California, October 22, 1861, and was mustered into Company G, 3rd California Infantry, October 23. Private Balling was posted to Utah Territory where he sustained severe wounds to his left arm and leg at Bear Lake July 29, 1862. He was mustered out at Camp Douglas for disability November 7, 1862 (Orton, p. 576). Anthony returned to California and settled at San Jose where he filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension February 6, 1878, and received application No. 248,310 and certificate No. 153,402. He was admitted to the Sawtelle Soldiers' Home from San Jose April 21, 1897, and while at the soldiers' home refiled for his veteran's pension March 14, 1907. Anthony Balling remained at the Sawtelle Home until his death. He was never married.
