PFC Banks was both a United States Marine Corps veteran and a United States Navy veteran. He attained the rank of Private First Class in the Marine Corps and was a Damage Control enlisted man in the Navy. He was awarded a Navy Good Conduct medal for his service in the Navy and the USMC Good Conduct medal for his service in the Marine Corps.
He was also awarded the National Defense Service medal and was eligible for the Korean Service medal.
