Alden G. Banks was born in Portland, Maine, to Florence and George Gable. Early years were spent in Pasig, Rizal, Philippine Islands, which he often recalled with fond memories. On his mother's return to the United States, she married Floyd Banks who adopted Al. Stationed at Selfrich Field, Michigan, Al attended school in nearby Mt. Clemons, participating in football, baseball, and boxing.

On entry of the United States in World War II, Al joined the USAF in 1942, serving in Kimbolton, England and North Africa. He was discharged as a Sergeant in Stockton, California. Moving to Merced where his folks resided, he was employed by Saunders Furniture, learning to upholster furniture and floor installation. In later years, Al and George Caplener opened Alert Floor Company until their retirement.

Being active in sports, Al played hardball as well as softball with the Merced Merchants team. Bowling on teams and in leagues at the bowling alley was big as he met his future wife there. Al married Winifred in 1948, purchased their first home in 1951, and subsequently remodeled twice more. He then joined the Merced Golf and Country Club where he served as Handicap Chairman until computers arrived. During his golfing years, he had five hole-in-ones.

Al enjoyed fishing, especially with the grown grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed painting pumpkins for both little and big kids, as well as for local businesses; however, Al never accepted any monies since most requests were for Disney Characters, which are trademarked. Al always was giving out candy and small gifts to friends and to people he would meet, and was always ready to tell a joke or two. He also enjoyed going to local places to karaoke, which was his special joy along with ballroom dancing.

Graveside service will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park.
