1st Earl of Northbrook. He graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford University in 1846 with a Master of Arts (M.A.). Among the offices he held were; the office of Private Secretary to the Board of Trade; the office of Private Secretary to the India Board; the office of Private Secretary to the Home Office; the office of Private Secretary to the Admiralty as well as the office of Lord of the Admiralty between 1857 and 1858. Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Penryn and Falmouth between 1857 and 1866, and held the office of Under-Secretary for India between 1859 and 1861 and the office of Under-Secretary for India between 1861 and 1864. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 7 August 1869. He was invested as a Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Star of India (G.C.S.I.) on 13 April 1876. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University. He held the office of President of the Royal Geographic Society between 1879 and 1880 and was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.). He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire from 1892 to his death.
