Anna Fae Barkley, born on the 17th of June 1925 in Eudora, Arkansas, died peacefully on Wednesday, the 3rd of August 2011.
Anna Fae was the daughter of Samuel David Harris, Jr. and Carrie B. "Chick" Harris. After growing up in the Great Depression, Anna graduated from Eudora High School and landed a job in Greenville, Mississippi, working for a local attorney. At his urging, however, she made her way to Houston, Texas, in search of better opportunities. There, she found a job as a secretary at Shell Oil, where she worked until she met James E. "Jim" Barkley, Jr. Three months after their first date, Jim and "Annie" married on the 20th of August 1961. In 1962, Jim's job took the couple to the Washington, DC area, where their son, James H. "Jimmy" Barkley, was born. They returned to Houston in 1967.
A faithful member of South Main Baptist Church, Anna Fae lived out her faith on a daily basis. She generously donated her time translating books into brail, creating each raised letter by hand. She volunteered at Easter Seals Disability Services, taking young Jimmy with her to introduce him to the joy of volunteering and helping those in need. Anna Fae played the role of confidant for countless family members, friends, and their children. She possessed a rare ability to listen and offer honest advice without ever being judgmental. When she decided that Strake Jesuit high school was the right place for her son, she went back to work as a book keeper at Wicket Antiques to make sure the family could afford the added expense. Later in life, to help her son and daughter-in-law build their own life in Houston, she provided regular babysitting for her grandchildren, Drew and Kate.
Anna Fae is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, James E. Barkley; her son, Jim Barkley and his wife, Jan; and their children, Drew and Kate; her sister, Betty Pickett of Pineville, La.; her brother, Sam Harris of Eudora, AR.; and ten nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of The Colonnades nursing home in Pearland, TX for their loving and compassionate care of Anna Fae in her final months and to all of her dear friends who visited her and brightened her days.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 8th of August, in the Library and Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 9th of August, at South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main Street in Houston, where Dr. Steve Wells, Pastor, is to officiate. Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent fellowship hall.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
