SPEARMAN - Freeman BARKLEY, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Mr. BARKLEY was born Albert Freeman BARKLEY Jr. to Gertrude and A. F. BARKLEY on Feb. 28, 1914, in Old Hansford. He married Ruby Mae MOSS in 1937. She preceded him in death in 1970. He married Elva Lee SHEETS in 1975. She preceded him in death in 1982.

He was an active person in the community. He was a vice-president of First State Bank, a master mason of Masonic Lodge 1040 AF&AM, a member of First United Methodist Church and the Boy Scout program.

He served as a city commissioner of Spearman for 14 years. He served his church faithfully throughout his life. He enjoyed ranching, woodworking and family and friends.

He was Papaw to five grandchildren whom he called on a regular basis, and who revere him greatly. His great joy was his great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Virginia RENFRO.

Survivors include a son, Bill BARKLEY and wife, Tommie, of Amarillo; a daughter, Mary Ellen KIRKLAND and husband, Malcolm, of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Gertrude ARCHER of Amarillo and Reba HUFFHINES of Oklahoma City; his grandchildren, Heather BARKLEY of Sunnyvale, Calif., Brian and Clint BARKLEY, both of Amarillo, Jana and Danny PROCHASKA of Sulphur Springs and Paul and Jaime KIRKLAND, both of Tyler; and a great-grandson, Kaden KIRKLAND.

The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church or the Spearman or Hansford Cemetery Associations.
