Hallie was a twin of her brother Charles L. Barnes (1892-1980). They were born at their home on their parent's farm located about 1 mile southeast of the former town of Patterson, Harvey County, Kansas. The town of Patterson was located about half way between the towns of Mount Hope and Burrton. A tall cement grain elevator stands today near where the town of Patterson once was. Dr. Thomas S. Hunt (1830-1900) was on hand to help in the delivery of the twins and stayed overnight. Hallie and Charles were the 8th and 9th children of Armstead L. Barnes (1843-1923) and Inez G. Dickerson Barnes (1850-1938).
Hallie, age 19, of Burrton, Kansas, was married in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas on Nov. 15, 1911 to Joseph William Back, Jr., age 26, of Billings, Oklahoma.
