Mary Gibbes was born 1721/1722 in St John's Island. Her parents were Colonel John Gibbes(son of SC Gov Robert Gibbes) and Mary Woodward (daughter of Col John Woodward and Elizabeth Stanyarne). Mary's grandfather was Dr. Henry Woodward, the first British colonist of colonial South Carolina. She married Colonel Nathaniel Barnwell April 7,1738 and they had 15 children. She died on Dec 4, 1801 of pleurisy and was buried Dec 5th.
"Died at Beaufort, Port Republic, on the night of the 4th instant; in the 80th year of her age. Mrs. Mary Barnwell, relict of colonel Nathaniel Barnwell, dec. The very many virtues and engaging qualifications, in social life, secured to this venerable lady the esteem of an extensive acquaintance, and real affection of an ancient and respectable connection. She has left a numerous progeny to unite in general sympathy; and her remains were interred in the family vault, with all degree of respect which she justly merited" South Carolina State Gazette and Timothy's Daily Advertiser, Friday, Dec 18,1801.
