Mr. Bartlett was born November 5th, 1807 in Lisle, Broome Co. of this state, and was married to Hannah Pooler, in Franklin, N.Y. February 2d, 1832. Of this union there were six children, of whom five are living. They are Butler F. Bartlett, of Delhi, N.Y., Mrs. J.Y. Jones and Mrs. H.A. Cole, of Chicago, Mrs. Elmer B. Payne and Mrs. Adelbert L. Palmer, of Bainbridge. Mr. Bartlett was a resident of this place nearly sixty years.
Soon after coming here he was made toll gatherer of our bridge at a time when toll bridges were the most prominent features of inland villages. He continued this position of responsibility and trust for thirty years. In early life he became a member of the Presbyterian church and upon his removal to Bainbridge, so identified himself with the interest of that society; that he was made deacon, and by wise counsels, efficient services and pure religious life, was a strong support to the different pastors, and to the members and world at large, an example of steadfastness of purpose in well doing, as well as being a model of moral excellence.
The last nine years of his wife's life were saddened by a paralytic stroke rendering her almost helpless, and the husband was always the ready, kind, sympathetic and faithful companion to minister to her sufferings, and by gentle and patient service make her stay on earth less joyless. Mr. Bartlett went to Chicago last December to visit his daughters, enjoying good health with memory and eye sight perfect until stricken with paralysis two months ago and death resulted.
Bainbridge has lost an octogenarian, an highly esteemed citizen; the family has lost a friend, a father, whose life to them will always be a precious memory." [Bainbridge Republican, Aug. 25, 1894]
