John Albert Bassett

John Albert Bassett, age 79, of New Castle, DE passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 28, 2014.
Born in Rhodesdale, Maryland on August 8, 1934, Mr. Bassett was a son of the late Joseph W. Bassett and Ruby M. Smith Bassett. He honorably served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Bassett worked for NVF as a machine operator, retiring after 45 years of dedicated service.
He was a 57 year member of Bethany Baptist Church in Wilmington, where he will be fondly remembered as "the" church greeter. In his leisure time, Mr. Bassett enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets and was an avid sports fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Wendy Meyer; sister, Mary Jane Harding; half-sisters, Nora Walston, who raised him from age 7 and Joyce Di Rosa; and his mother and father-in-law, John and Margaret Mello. Mr. Bassett is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Mello Bassett; brothers, Joseph W. Bassett and James Bassett, both of Secretary, MD; sisters-in-law, Margaret Lines (Charles) of Bermuda and Hilda Elliott of Great Britain; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Bethany Baptist Church, 410 Denver Road, Wilmington, DE 19804, where friends may call from 10:30 am until 12 Noon. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Baptist Church at the address listed above or to Seasons Hospice of Delaware, 220 Continental Drive, Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713.
