In 1902, he joined the Portland Police Department as a beat patrolman and during his 19 years on the force worked his way up to Police Inspector. His death was reported on the front page of the Portland Evening Express of 22 March 1921: "his work...sent him on many details of a varied character the performance of which won him many words of commendation from his superior officers."
