90, of Harwichport died following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Robert Bates. The daughter of Louis and Rose (Hahn) Malnati, Mrs. Bates was born in Quincy and was a graduate of North Quincy High School. As a young woman she worked as a shoe model for Last Manufacturing and traveled throughout New England. During WWII she volunteered at Fore River Naval Shipyard in Quincy. An engaging personality, Mrs. Bates loved meeting people and worked as a salesperson for a variety of companies including Rimmer's Relief Printing of Boston and Phillip Morris. She also worked for Filene's, Jordan Marsh, and Gem stores. In the 1950s she and her husband owned and operated the Bass River Hardware Store. She also worked as an ad representative for the original Cape Cod Guide. A resident of Harwichport since 1977, Mrs. Bates worked at Dearborn's Corner Card Gallery for 14 years, retiring in 1993. She had a great sense of humor, a keen wit, and enjoyed keeping up with current events. She was happiest spending time with her family and enjoyed reading and crafts. She is survived by two daughters, Pattyann of Jacksonville, Florida, Nancy Louise of West Roxbury, 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her son Richard Bates.
