CHATHAM - Bruce E. Bates, 74, died Oct. 2 at his home. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Pennell) Bates for 54 years.
Mr. Bates was born in New York City and grew up in Longmeadow, Mass. He graduated from Avon Old Farms Preparatory School in Avon, Conn., in 1950. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge in 1954, he and his family relocated to Connecticut and he began a career in the folding carton industry. He worked for firms serving the Northeast and founded his own company, Custom Carton Inc. of Branford, Conn., in 1968. He served as CEO of this corporation until it was sold in 1992.
He retired to Chatham in 1995 where he enjoyed visits from his family who had been spending time in Chatham since the late 1950s. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. His foremost hobby was fishing the Cape and the North Woods of Maine.
Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Linda Bates of Pomfret Center, Conn., Susan Tierney of Guilford, Conn., and Catherine Reeves of Summerville, S.C.; his sister, Pamela Richards of Newburyport; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held today, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. at The First Congregational Church of Chatham. Burial will be private.
