Charles F. Bates
Charles F. Bates passed away at his home on the Old Newport Road Friday, March 12, following a brief illness. Mr. Bates, was born in Levant 81 years ago, the son of John S. and Mercy R. (Hoyt) Bates. At an early age he came to Dexter with his parents, and for the past 44 years has made his home on the farm where he passed away. 52 years ago he was united in marriage to Emma E. Libby of Corinna, who survives him. To this union five children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Besides Mrs. Bates, a son, Carl Bates, two daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Bessy) V. Tewksbury, and Mrs. Earl (Louise) S. Sawtelle, four grandchildren Mildred, Wayne, Beverly Jean, and Elmer Sawtelle, all of this town, and one nephew, Forrest C. Toward, of Revere, Mass., are left to mourn his death. Quiet, industrious, honorable, a kind husband and father, the community will regret the passing of one who was always a good neighbor and friend.
Services were held from the home Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Quigg of the Baptist church, speaking words of comfort.
Those from out of town who came to attend the services were Forrest C. Toward and Harold Jackson of Revere, Mass., Mrs. Viola C. Lander and Mrs. Della A. Shorey of Corinna.
