George J. Bates, Jr., age 89, of 27 Charter Street, Salem, husband of the late Ruth (Sheehan) Bates, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning, October 29, 2009 at North Shore Medical Center in Salem.


Born in Salem, the son of the late Congressman and City of Salem Mayor, George J. Bates Sr. and Nora (Jennings) Bates, he graduated from Salem High School. Mr. Bates then attended Worcester Academy and was employed by the United Shoe Machinery Corp in Beverly until the outbreak of World War II when he joined the United States Navy. For over 10 years he proudly served his country during both World War II and the Korean War. Following his discharge, he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Contract and Transportation Officer until his retirement.


Mr. Bates was an active member of the Salem community and was recognized for his many years of involvement when he served as Grand Marshall of the Heritage Days Parade in 1993. He was a lifetime member and officer of A.O.H Division 18 in Salem, and had been honored as Irishman of the Year. A lifelong parishioner of St. James Church, he and his late wife, Ruth, had been honored as the recipients of the Whalen Award for their dedication and commitment to the parish community.


Mr. Bates was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Gabrielle Druillette Assembly and the Third Degree Member of the Knight of Columbus Veragua Council 75 of Salem. He loved music and was a member of the St. James choir. He especially appreciated his many friends in the Golden Tones Chorale with whom he had sung for many years. The City of Salem had also recognized Mr. Bates for his outstanding volunteerism with the first City of Salem Lifetime Volunteer Award. A dedicate father, he was very proud of his family and had been recognized by the Salem Council on Aging as Father of the Year.


He is survived by five children, Patricia Bates of Wakefield, Donald and his wife Patricia of Salem, Elizabeth and her husband John LeClerc of Salem, Nancy and her husband Bruce Putnam of Monson, Maine, William and his wife Patricia Bates of Salem; two brothers, Capt Raymond Bates USN, Ret., and his wife Muriel of Marblehead and Francis and his wife Dorothy Bates of Peabody; a sister, Carolyn Stanton of Marblehead; and five grandchildren, Nichole Coppola, John LeClerc, Joseph LeClerc, Mary Bates and Christina Mottolo; three great-grandchildren Jessica, Madalyn and Harry; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son and daughter-in-law, George and Susan Bates; three sisters, Margaret Bates, Katherine Ginty and Mary Sawtell; and a brother, Congressman William Bates.


His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, (corner of North Street), Salem, to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. James Church, 161 Federal Street, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
