Married: Margaret Ellen Foxcroft in 1869, Bolton
She died on the 7th September 1912 and is buried in the Friends Burial Ground, York
Born 1835, at Lumbutts, near Todmorden, the fourth (and youngest surviving) son of William Bayes and Hannah (nee Uttley).
In 1856 he was still and Lumbutts and was a schoolteacher. I imagine this was at Lumbutts school where his Mother was a teacher. According to one reference, he was a member of the Calderdale Poets.
By 1865 he had become an active Quaker, a faith he maintained until his death.
In 1866, the business of Waddington and Bayes, at the Pavement, (Todmorden?) was a Telegraph Office and published the Todmorden Times on a Friday. Sometime later in the 1860's, this business was for sale. Also about this time he must have married Margaret Ellen Coxcroft (b. 27 July 1842 in Halifax). They had four children:
Walter Robert Bayes b. 15 April 1870 Todmorden
James Austin Bayes b. 7 Sept 1872 Halifax
Anne Alice Bayes b. 9 Sept 1874 Brighouse (d.1966)
Mary Lavinia Bayes b. 1 Nov 1876 Brighouse (d. 1954)
From 1873 he published from his offices at Briggate, Hipperholme cum Brighouse, the Brighouse and Elland Express, (4pp at ½d. on Friday, 8pp at 1d. on Saturday). From here he also published Bayes' Almanac and various other books. The family were living here in 1881.
This business appeared to have failed early in 1899 when he was forced to ‘call his creditors together'.
Also in 1899, he had the opportunity to visit America with an Uttley cousin. He left in May and returned in 1902.
He appears to be living in Heslington Road, York when his wife died in 1912. He himself died in 1916 (Bio submitted by Jack Bayes 46943983)
