"The LaFayette (AL) Sun" - October 21, 1896:

In Memory of My Dear Mother.

Mother is gone! It is with an aching heart I write these lines. How sad, Oh, how sad, to know I shall never more behold her dear face nor hear her sweet voice again. But Thy will, Oh, God, be done. She died at the residence of her son, E. B. Alford, in Henderson, Texas, July 9th, 1896. She died as she lived – a true Christian. She joined the Baptist church in early life. Though her suffering for some time was great, she bore it with Christian fortitude till at last death demanded the transient of the soul when it took its exit from this body of clay to the climes of ultimate glory. She was such a kind, devoted mother, and though she be silent in death, the effulgent rays of her living example will never cease to penetrate and warm up the chilly hearts of her children.
