BREWER - Doris (Littlefield) Beatham, 81, a resident of the
Phillips-Strickland House, Bangor, and a longtime Brewer
resident, wife of the late Curtis D. Beatham, died Oct. 14,
1999, at a Bangor hospital. She was born in Brewer, Dec.
17, 1917, the daughter of Walter and Nellie (Milton)
Littlefield. She was a graduate of Brewer High School, Class
of 1934 and a 1936 graduate of Gilman Business College.
She was employed by the Eastern Fine Paper Co. for nine
years and by the late Drs. Albert Todd, Lawrence Cutler
and James Clement. She was a member for more than 50
years and a past matron of Tuscan Chapter No. 148, OES
of Bangor; a past president of Wimodausis Club and
secretary of the Past Matrons Association. She was a
charter member and first president of the Issac E. Clewely
Auxiliary VFW of Brewer, past president of the Bangor
Woman's Home Culture Club, a former member and past
Noble Grand of Rebekah's. She was an active and devoted
member of her church, a former deaconess and Sunday
school teacher for many years. She and her late husband
were youth leaders for the church for 10 years. Doris was
known for all the cards she sent to church members and
others in the community and was called "Miss Doris", the
card lady. She served on the Brewer City Council for six
years and was mayor for two different terms, being the first
lady mayor in the New England states. She did volunteer
work at the Brewer Convalescent Center from 1977 and
assisted with the Salvation Army Program. Surviving in
addition to her sister, Beatrice Tuttle of Mentor, Ohio are
three cousins, Harold Norwood of New Smyrna Beach,
Fla., Marian Prince of Athens, Ohio, Ruth Skinner of
Nashville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Littlefield of
Millbrae, Calif.; several nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by a brother, Robert Littlefield. Friends may
call 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Brookings-Smith
Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 So. Main St., Brewer, where an
Eastern Star Memorial Service will be conducted by the
officers of Tuscan Chapter at 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will
be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper
Chapel, Brewer, with the Rev. Constance Chase Wells,
pastor of the First Congregational Church, Brewer,
officiating. Private interment will be in the Maine Veterans
Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Gifts in her memory may be
sent to the memorial fund of the First Congregational Church,
35 Church St., Brewer.
